Synthesis.. Asprin
Salicylic acid + acetic anhydride ->(conc. H3SO4) acetylsalicylic acid [Asprin] + acetic acid.
Take a sample :
a mixture of 3.50 g of salicylic acid (C7H603) and 6.00 mL of acetic anhydride (C4H603, density 1.08 g/mL) was heated in the presence of catalytic amount of conc. H2SO4 to form the acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin, C3H8O4) and acetic acid (C2H4O2).
After the reaction took place, it was cooled, and 12 mL of water was added to destroy the excess acetic anhydride and cause the product to crystallize. The aspirin was then collected by suction filtration, purified by recrystallization in minimum amount of 95% ethanol, and its weight and melting point determined. Results: 3.45 g of Aspirin was synthesized, and its melting point m.pt. was determined to be 132-138 °C.
