Take a sample : a mixture of 3.50 g of salicylic acid (C7H603) and 6.00 mL of acetic anhydride (C4H603, density 1.08 g/mL) was heated in the presence of catalytic amount of conc. H2SO4 to form the acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin, C3H8O4) and acetic acid (C2H4O2). After the reaction took place, it was cooled, and 12 mL of water was added to destroy the excess acetic anhydride and cause the product to crystallize.
